Declan’s Journal

Unguarded notes from
wherever they find me.

These aren’t in order. Most of the originals didn’t survive, so they’re grouped by what they were like instead of when.

Discouraged When the floor gives out

Hiding When the mask has been on so long it feels like a face

Dry When nothing’s happening and you’re going anyway

Wrestling When the questions won’t sit down

  • Inclination

Truly mastering my own sinful propensities — is it really possible? Or do we just get really good at hiding?

    Read it

Still When you stop long enough to hear it

Clear When the thing finally comes into focus

  • Six Hungers

At the core of everything I do, I think I’ve distilled six indelible hungers.

A hunger for beauty — moments that stop me where I stand. For story — an arc that pulls meaning out of the chaos. For imagination — the freedom to dream beyond what is. For connection — to be truly seen, truly known. For agency — the power to matter, to choose, to change things. And for meaning — the conviction that my life is not an accident.

  • More of an Exchange

I read “God will supply all your needs” as a blanket promise for years. Then I read what comes right before it.

    Read it

Undone When He gets past your defenses

  • You Don’t Know You’re In It

I still find it hard to believe I lived my whole life without truly understanding what it means to let God transform my desires and lead me into His will — without getting in the way, without adding my own hand to it.

But that’s the thing about legalism: you don’t know you’re in it until you experience something so radically different, something that works so impossibly well, that it becomes undeniable.
