More of an Exchange

I always read “God will supply all your needs” as a blanket promise — just something that’s true. But when you actually sit and wrestle with the context, it’s not that simple. Paul says it to the Philippians right after they’d given away their own sustenance to support his work (Phil. 4:19, cf. 4:15–18). The provision comes after the giving. Almost like it’s tied to it.

Then I noticed the same thing with the “peace that passes understanding.” I always figured that peace just shows up — kind of descends on you. But Paul lays out steps before it: pray, hand God the stuff you’re anxious about, thank Him for what He’s already done (Phil. 4:6–7). The peace comes on the other side of that.

So maybe blessing is more of an exchange than I’ve wanted to admit. Not an even one — I’ve got so little to bring — but I give my little, and what comes back is way out of proportion.

Lord, help me depend on You for my peace, and not on the other stuff I reach for — noise, people, whatever numbs the edge. And help me live it out in a way that rubs off on the people around me.
