Empty As Fast As I Say Them
When nothing’s happening and you’re going anyway
They say prayer is supposed to be intentional. Set aside the time. Quiet the mind. Focus on what needs to be said.
And I believe it. But too often mine is just a passing thought. A few words here and there that go empty almost as fast as I say them. Ritual.
I want it to be more than that. I want to look forward to it — crave it, even. I want to lift others up. I want to wrestle with You for strength.
Daniel prayed three times a day. The Muslims have their mats and their hours (okay — maybe not the best example). But I keep landing on the same thing: I need this to be non-negotiable. Because I’m weaker than I look on the outside. More vulnerable than I want anyone to see — maybe more than I want to see myself.
I forget that when the day gets loud. I forget that when things are going fine and I don’t feel like I need You.
Lord, help me find the passion to bring my prayers alive. Help me see. Help me want this. I need this. Amen.
